The Challenge
With over 500 branches, ATU is Germany's largest workshop chain, yet it had little relevance among the younger target group. For a long time, negative sentiment dominated social media, with memes and mockery of the brand being the order of the day. The goal was to radically change this image: moving away from the "unloved workshop chain" to an approachable, likable brand that communicates with Gen Z on their level.
Execution
The social strategy focused on authenticity, self-irony, and community closeness. Instead of traditional advertising, ATU showcased everyday workshop life in a relatable, funny way with genuine community connection.
A key lever was active social listening: ATU responded to comments, picked up on moods, and turned criticism into content. In this way, the mockery of "Amateure treiben Unfug" (Amateurs causing mischief) was transformed into a self-deprecating content series and, ultimately, a brand identity.
With the brand persona Maddy, ATU also gained a strong face: she took over the channel, spoke the language of Gen Z, and became an ally to the community. Her posts, reactions, and comments made ATU human, approachable, and suddenly a hype.
In parallel, organic and paid social worked hand-in-hand. Organic top performers were extended as Spark Ads, while creatives were tested and scaled. This brought humor and performance together: content that entertains—and converts.
Outcome
In just three months, the community grew by over 10,000 followers, the engagement rate climbed to 4%, and the sentiment shifted from almost exclusively negative to almost exclusively positive—a complete image transformation. But the true success goes deeper: ATU has shown that courage on social media pays off. Those who listen, stand out, and stay honest win trust and build communities.
