Have you ever wondered why some brands go through the roof on social media while others don't? The answer is storytelling! On social media platforms, companies, creators, and users compete for the only currency that matters: attention. To stand out from the crowd, unparalleled storytelling is the key. It allows you to present your brand in a unique way and build an emotional connection with your audience.

In this blog post, we’ll show you how to tell stories on social media that would make even the Brothers Grimm weak at the knees. You’ll learn what makes a story successful and how brands like AEVOR skillfully use social media storytelling. We’ll also give you valuable tips on how to revolutionize your own storytelling.

What is storytelling?

Social media storytelling refers to the art and strategy of using compelling narratives to build a deeper connection with your target audience and convey messages effectively. This content, on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others, is intended not just to inform, but to inspire, entertain, and create an emotional bond with the audience. By using narrative elements, creative content, and targeted messaging, you can capture your audience's attention and build long-term loyalty.

Why is storytelling indispensable on social media?

In today’s fast-paced social media world, it is essential for brands not just to sell, but to tell a story. There are evolutionary reasons for this: the limbic system in our brain plays a crucial role in processing emotions. It determines whether information stays in our short-term memory or is transferred to our valuable long-term memory. This is relevant when understanding the importance of storytelling. Unlike dry lists of facts and figures, stories can evoke emotions. When we hear or experience a story, it activates not only our senses but also the emotional center of our brain. As a result, stories usually leave a lasting impression and are anchored in our long-term memory. This applies to childhood memories, but also to brands and companies. When they use storytelling to convey their messages, they create a connection with their target audiences on an emotional level. These emotional connections are what make people remember a brand, identify with it, and ultimately lead to conversions. Storytelling allows you to stand out from the competition and is an effective strategy for increasing engagement, strengthening brand loyalty, and boosting reach.

Storytelling in practice: The TikTok fairy tale of AEVOR

When researching potential best practices, one brand currently stands out: the startup AEVOR has impressively demonstrated over the past few months how successful storytelling works on TikTok. Their recipe for success is characterized by an innovative approach that is refreshingly different and captivating.

‍

On the brand’s TikTok channel, social media manager Belinda and her boss Felix are the main characters who regularly battle it out. It’s usually Belinda who hatches creative ideas to surprise Felix. The community loves this playful rivalry because AEVOR has understood one of the most fundamental aspects of social media: it’s about being "social." By establishing consistent faces for the channel, they can foster strong identification and a bond with the community. This is often the key to a competitive advantage on social media, as products can be quickly copied, but personalities are unique.

1. Tip: Establish consistent account faces🌟

Give your brand a face. Authentic personalities who reflect the values and tone of your target audience are indispensable. This is clearly evident in AEVOR’s TikTok presence, where the employees become the faces of the brand and are the reason why users follow the account.

For a mini-campaign called "Best Day AEVOR," Belinda set herself the goal of gaining 30,000 new followers (reaching a total of 100,000 subscribers) in just over three weeks. To do this, she secretly traveled to Lisbon to surprise Felix, framing her actions as a secret mission to provide unique content and motivate users to subscribe to the account. Spoiler alert: Felix was briefly annoyed and shocked when he ran into Belinda and her accomplice. In the end, however, he even goes over his own boss's head because he thinks the campaign is so great. A happy ending, then. In more ways than one, because Belinda has since reached her goal and cracked the 100,000 follower mark. And that is primarily due to the storytelling. AEVOR released a series of TikToks that build on each other like a 20-episode show. Throughout this campaign, Belinda brought users along from the very beginning, made them her accomplices, and built suspense from video to video.

2. Tip: Start episodes and formats💡

The mini-series concept and episodic formats are highly effective methods in storytelling. They provide continuity, create suspense and anticipation among users, allow for character development, and foster brand loyalty. Furthermore, regular publication of new episodes increases anticipation and time spent on the platform, which can boost visibility and reach. Not sure how to approach this? Food products, for example, can be told brilliantly through cooking challenges or recipe series; beauty products could be presented in a "Get ready with me" style for various activities and occasions.

Important: The focus shouldn't be on the product or the result, but on the process itself. It’s about providing authentic, unfiltered insights—not just showcasing the finished dish (as in recipe series), but the journey there, including sourcing ingredients, the cooking process, and the fails. AEVOR does exactly this with their smart storytelling concept. And even though the entire story is staged, Belinda brings so much personality and humor to the account that viewers are hooked. Interestingly, this creative approach makes the videos, which are relatively long at about a minute and a half, feel anything but.

Tip 3: Bet on young talent 🤳🏼

Trust the skills and instincts of your younger employees when it comes to social media. As part of that same generation, they understand its language, humor, and mindset. They stay on top of trends and find an authentic tone of voice for your communications. This makes them indispensable for building a strong connection with your target audience and keeping your brand communication relevant and engaging.

Conclusion

Storytelling is more than just a marketing tool—it’s an art form that, when used correctly, can uniquely position your brand in the digital world. Beyond the benefits already mentioned, there is another crucial reason to dive deep into marketing storytelling: it pays off in the long run. Great stories will continue to play an essential role in marketing, regardless of the new channels and technologies that emerge to present them. The fundamental goal remains the same: to evoke emotions and build a positive connection between your brand, your products, and your target audience.
