With the sheer volume of offers and advertisements out there, social proof is becoming increasingly important: people trust reviews and the experiences of other users more than ever, far more than they trust overt corporate advertising. This is because personal recommendations feel more authentic and less commercially motivated. To boost credibility and trust in your products and services, you can leverage this human tendency with the help of creators. These content creators integrate their recommendations into the context of their own lives, creating a personal connection with their audience. Today, there are various types of creators, most notably influencers, professional content creators, and "everyday" users who produce User Generated Content. The problem is that these three terms are often used interchangeably or confused, even though they describe very different roles. For brands, however, it is crucial to understand these distinctions to effectively shape their marketing strategy and reach their target audiences. In this article, we take a closer look at the differences between influencers, content creators, and User Generated Content, and explain what you should look for when choosing the right approach for your marketing.

Definitions & Characteristics

Just a few years ago, people with a large reach and significant influence were simply called influencers. Terms like "content creator" and "User Generated Content" (UGC) were largely unknown back then and have only become established in recent years. Many companies often confuse these different types of creators. It’s no wonder—after all, all three have in common that they use social media to share content and reach an audience. But where do the differences lie? Below, we take a closer look at influencers, content creators, and users, and explain their respective characteristics.

What is an influencer?

Influencers are individuals who have made a name for themselves, often through their personality, expertise, or lifestyle, and have built a large following on social platforms like Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok. The term "influencer" comes from the verb "to influence." They enjoy the trust of their followers and are therefore able to significantly sway the opinions and purchasing decisions of their audience. Brands can leverage this position of trust to promote their products in an authentic way by collaborating with influencers through partnerships and sponsored posts. This advertising usually takes place on the influencer's own channel and can include long-term partnerships, one-off sponsored posts or stories, collaborative posts, or event appearances. Payment is based on various KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) such as reach, follower count, engagement rate, platform, and the type of content.

Depending on their reach, influencers are categorized into different types, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • Nano-influencers: With 1,000 to 10,000 followers, they are characterized by a high engagement rate and a close-knit community
  • Micro-influencers: With 10,000 to 100,000 followers, they reach specific target groups and enjoy strong credibility
  • Macro-influencers: With 100,000 to 1 million followers, they have a larger reach and appeal to a broader audience
  • Mega-influencers: With over 1 million followers, they achieve enormous reach. They are often celebrities or social media stars, but frequently have a lower engagement rate

To share their content and engage their followers, influencers use various social media platforms, each with different strengths and target audiences. Instagram is particularly popular for photos, stories, and reels, making it ideal for influencers in fashion, beauty, food, family, and lifestyle. YouTube, on the other hand, is the perfect platform for longer videos, tutorials, and vlogs, often used by influencers in beauty, gaming, tech, and DIY. TikTok, known for its short videos and trends, is also gaining importance in beauty, lifestyle, travel, DIY, and food. Twitch, the leading live-streaming platform, is especially popular with gaming influencers, as they can interact with their audience in real time.

The characteristics of an influencer at a glance:

✅ Reach & Influence: Influencers have a broad and often consumption-oriented target audience—the goal is to influence their purchasing decisions

✅ Credibility and Trust: Their authenticity stems from their personal connection to their followers and the transparency of their brand partnerships. Their credibility is built on the trust they establish through their recommendations

✅ Industry Focus: Many influencers specialize in specific topics such as fashion, beauty, travel, food, fitness, or technology

✅ Interaction Skills: Influencers interact regularly with their followers and foster a strong sense of community

✅ Content Creation: They create visually appealing content that usually revolves around their personal lifestyle, experiences, and product recommendations. They share their daily life and use their platform to introduce and recommend brand products

✅ Brand Collaboration: Influencers often work with brands and create sponsored content for them. As a result, the content is usually promotional, as the goal is to sell products and increase brand awareness

✅ Online & Offline Presence: Influencers are active on multiple social media platforms to maximize their reach. Additionally, they often attend PR events and similar functions to expand their network

What is a content creator?

The term "content creator" comes from the verb "to create." Unlike influencers, who often prioritize the marketing of products, the strength of content creators lies in the quality and creativity of their work. Furthermore, content creators can operate independently of their reach. The focus is more on the content itself—how high-quality it is and how well it performs. Payment for content creators is based on several factors, such as experience, portfolio, the type of content created, and the effort involved in production. The specific product being presented also plays a role in pricing.

Key characteristics of a content creator at a glance:

✅ Quality: Content creators prioritize producing high-quality, aesthetically pleasing content that perfectly aligns with the specific product or client. Their authenticity is reinforced by the originality and quality of their work. Recognized as experts within their niche or field of interest, they possess a high level of credibility in those areas.

✅ Creativity: They are highly creative and bring innovative ideas to their work, often including complete concepts for video production. The goal of working with a content creator is to produce genuine, authentic content that builds brand authenticity.

✅ Engagement: Content creators often have a dedicated community that values and regularly consumes their content. The objective is to build an engaged community interested in the specific content and, ultimately, in the brand or product.

✅ Independence: They enjoy greater creative freedom and control over their content and are less bound by commercial interests than influencers.

What is a user?

In the context of User Generated Content (UGC), a user is an individual who creates content without being directly paid by brands. This content stems from the users' own motivation and can take the form of reviews, photos, videos, comments, or social media posts. UGC is authentic and often created spontaneously, which gives the content a unique level of credibility. Brands can benefit from this content by leveraging the trust and genuine experiences of users to promote their products and services.

Key characteristics of a user at a glance:

✅ Independence: Users create content on their own initiative and are not influenced by commercial interests. Because the content is not sponsored by brands, it comes across as particularly credible and trustworthy.

✅ Authenticity: User Generated Content reflects the genuine experiences and opinions of users. Since the content is often created spontaneously and without planning, it results in a high level of authenticity.

✅ Variety: The content can appear in various formats, such as photos, videos, reviews, or comments.

✅ Engagement: Users are often active in communities and regularly share their experiences and opinions.

Which format is right for your brand?

Influencer collaboration, creator-generated content, or user-generated content? The right choice can make all the difference in whether your brand gets noticed on social media. To decide which format to use for your marketing, you should keep your brand goals in mind.

Goal: Reach

Are you looking to market your products, services, or brand, achieve high reach quickly, target a specific audience, or are you simply lacking brand awareness? Then collaborating with influencers is definitely recommended! Before you do, however, you should check whether the influencer has already promoted your competitors and whether your brand or products truly align with the influencer's lifestyle and values.

Goal: Trust

Do you want to improve your brand image, strengthen your authenticity, and build trust? Content creators can help you with that.

Goal: Authenticity & Interaction

Do you want to provide authentic insights into the use of your products or services and encourage active participation from your community? Then user-generated content is the right choice. UGC allows you to obtain and showcase genuine experiences and opinions from your customers, which increases your brand's credibility. In doing so, you should ask yourself the following questions: How can I motivate my community to create content? What kind of content do I want to see? And how can I best use this content to build a strong connection with my target audience?

When making your selection, it’s also important to consider which platforms and target audiences you want to reach. TikTok and Instagram are ideal for younger demographics, as trends and products spread rapidly there. Keep in mind that Instagram remains the top platform for influencers, while creators often use both TikTok and Instagram. Are you serving a niche? Then find your perfect match! There are many influencers, creators, and users who focus on specific topics. By collaborating with them, you can reach targeted audiences with tailored content.

Choosing the right format and platform will help you reach your marketing goals much more effectively. A mix of influencers, content creators, and user-generated content is often the key to success—helping you increase reach, build brand awareness, and present your brand authentically.

Tips for collaborating with influencers, content creators, or using UGC

As mentioned, collaborating with influencers and content creators, as well as using user-generated content, offers huge opportunities for your brand. However, it can also come with challenges. To achieve the best possible results, you should keep a few key aspects in mind.

Communication

🎯 Define your goals: Clearly determine what you want to achieve through the collaboration—whether it’s brand awareness, lead generation, authenticity, increased sales, or engagement.

🗣️ Manage expectations: Discuss in detail what content should be created, how often, and on which platforms it will be published. Openly clarify the expectations of both the brand and the influencer or creator.

Contractual and legal aspects

📜 Usage rights: Clearly define how and where the created content may be used.

🖋️ Contractual agreements: A written contract should outline all the details of the collaboration.

📋 Briefing: Before starting any partnership, create a detailed brief that includes all essential information. This should cover content requirements (including the amount of raw footage for UGC), quality standards, do’s and don’ts, company values, product USPs, deadlines, and approval processes.

⚖️ Legal requirements: Ensure compliance with legal requirements, such as mandatory disclosure for sponsored content.

Measurability and performance tracking

📊 For influencer collaborations: Consider both soft KPIs like impressions and engagement rate, as well as hard KPIs like costs, ROI, CTR, CPM, and contribution margin.

📈 For creator collaborations: The focus here is on soft KPIs such as content performance, views, impressions, reach, average view time, interaction, engagement rate, and sentiment.
📲 For UGC: Here, everything revolves around soft KPIs like scroll-stop rate, hold rates, and CTR.

Content guidelines

🎨 Creative freedom: Give influencers, content creators, and UGC creators enough room to produce authentic and engaging content. They know their community best and understand what content works well on which platforms.

📏 Brand guidelines: Set clear brand guidelines and frameworks to ensure that the content consistently reflects the brand’s image, values, and messaging.

Sustainable strategy

🤝 Long-term relationships: Repeated collaborations with influencers or creators foster sustainable brand loyalty and strengthen audience trust. This creates brand recognition for both sides and can be more effective in the long run than one-off partnerships.

🌱 Community Building: Building and nurturing an engaged community is crucial. An active and loyal community can significantly contribute to brand perception and advocacy. Influencers or creators should actively interact with followers, gather feedback, and respond to questions. This strengthens the bond with the brand and fosters genuine interest in the products or services offered.

Conclusion

A successful content strategy often relies on a harmonious balance between user-generated content, creator-generated content, and influencer content. The first two excel primarily through their authenticity and quality, while influencers leverage their reach and follower loyalty. Combining these approaches can help brands develop an effective and compelling marketing strategy.
